First thing I did Friday morning was roll out of bed and buy Ab-Soul’s latest release “Control System” on my iPhone. After giving it a spin that morning, I liked it. Listening to it again on my way home that night, it grew on me a little more. But by Saturday afternoon, I loved it. I’ll be the first to admit, I’m a Black Hippy Stan, but there’s honestly not a song on this album I don’t like. The rhymes are good and the beats are chill. Although Ab-Soul does his thing, the songs featuring Kendrick Lamar (“Illuminate” and “Black Lip Bastard (Remix)”) are probably the best tracks on the album. And as far as other Black Hippy releases go, Schoolboy Q’s “Habits & Contradictions” is still probably my favorite album of 2012, but this isn’t far behind it. (Verdict: 8.0/10)
